Radha Selvester has been sewing all her life and currently runs the North Florida Sewing Center at 826 NW 23rd Avenue in Gainesville. She started hand sewing at age 3 and first sewed on a machine at age 5, sitting on her aunt's lap. At 10 she took her first sewing machine class, making a dress with a zipper. She loves to sew quilts, most of which are donated to charity to give warmth and comfort to people experiencing homelessness. She is a member of three quilting guilds, and she enjoys other needlework arts like needlepoint, crocheting, and knitting.
In this workshop, Radha will teach the lost art of Practical Sewing Skills. Participants will learn to hem (shorten) clothing, add patches to cover holes, sew on a button, and so much more. We will start at the beginning - threading a needle and tying a knot. We will also learn how to replace a drawstring and tricks for keeping velcro sticky. This is a class about sewing by hand and it is suitable for adults and chaperoned children age 8 and older.
